Wapping started the stronger putting Sudbury immediately onto the back foot, but the defence of Emma Stephens, Hayley Spooner , Katie Clark, Becky Younger and keeper Sandra Mackay kept their efforts at bay with some good solid defensive work.
Sudbury put together some good passages of play, through the midfield of Kirsty Sloan, Chloe Mills, Becky Spencer, Ellie Colton and Tracey Caddock, all working very hard to pressurise the Wapping defence, with good runs made by Jess Sheperdson upfront, but it was wapping who managed to convert their first short corner in the first half, the initial strike saved by Mackay but wapping managed to play on the rebound to make the score at half time 1 - 0
Sudbury made a few changes in the 2nd half, and came out a little bit better than they started, managing to keep the opositions defence busy, although wapping had their chances they were denied by some good saves by Mackay and some good clearances from the defence. It was Sudbury however that were awarded a flick from an initial strike by Sloan thatwas stopped on the line by the Wapping defenders body. Casey Humpries bravely stepped up to convert an excallent penalty flick to leave the score 1 - 1
Sudburys 2nd game against Broxbourne was again another wake up call, Sudbury still looking like they needed to get out of the blocks. Sudbury made further changes between games trying players in different positions, again Sudbury were putting together some good passages of play and at times looking promising. Broxbourne opened the score from open play, which fired sudbury up who kept more possesion and eventually a goal came from a lovely hit from a lovely cross in from the left from Ellie Colton who found Kirsty Sloan at the top of the D who sent the ball to the back of the net. This game finished as the last did and in fact as all games at Broxbounrn as a 1 - 1 draw.
Sep 6, 2010, 3:55 pm Sudbury Ladies 2nd X1 2 - 1 Phoenix Ladies A new season with a new captain Collette Cottrell and plenty of new faces for this first friendly game of the new season. Phoenix were a young side from Braintree and looked the sharper in the early exchanges but the midfield of Lily Chang, Olivia Hurley, Alice King and Lucy Kevis soon got a feel for the pace and started to both stifle Phoenix attacks and start to feed Debbie King on the forward line. King scored her first of the season after 20 minutes when left unmarked she shot from the top right of the D and her angled powerful shot left the keeper stranded. Debutant Kate Hurley and regular Anna Cooper tackled and broke down play well in the defensive area of the park with Sarah Wordley distributing the ball and getting play moving. Keeper Cottrell was called upon to make a number of saves in the first half from open play and numerous short corners but her skill and that of her defence thwarted the visitors efforts. At half time coach Kevis asked for more commitment from the young legs in the side in being first to 50/50 balls and upping the tenacity shown. Phoenix continued to push, once again gaining a dozen short corners but an in form Cottrell saved with every part of her body to deny them a goal. Sudbury looked dangerous on the break with the fresh legs of Florrie Barber providing the pace, supported by the experience of Debbie King who secured a brace when she fired home a spilt ball from 6 yards out. Phoenix grabbed a late consolation from one of their many short corners and will be kicking themselves that they didn’t convert their numerous chances into more goals. Player of the match was awarded jointly to Anna Cooper and Collette Cottrell. A good first win for the newly formed Sudbury side. Apr 12, 2010, 3:10 pm Felixstowe Ladies 1st X1 1 - 0 Sudbury Ladies 4th X1 As the final game of the season arrived, Sudbury traveled to Felixstowe expecting a tough game against the first place team in the league. Sudbury were positive with everyone in high sprits and ready for the challenge ahead. The game began well for Sudbury who attacked strongly and piled the pressure on the opposing goal, surprising and un-nerving the opposition. The right side of Molly May, Kate Hurley and Emma Bonner had a particularly strong first half, working well together to help push forward. Linking well with the attackers Catherine Nay, Celia Fitch-Holland and Maria Risley. At half time the score remained 0-0 and the final team talk of the season made the girls determined to make the rest of the game count. The second half continued much the same as the first with Player of the season Alice King working tirelessly to create chances and goal opportunities, linking well with most improved player, Hannah Joy. Sudbury’s back four of Emma Bonner, Jessica Kendall, Olivia Hurley and Jaclyn Taylor worked well together, taking note of all the advice given to them this season, clearing the ball well and limiting Felixstowe’s chances at goal. Goal Keeper Peggy Bridges had another strong game, making many fantastic and impressive saves. Sudbury’s continuing hard work and positive determination look set to pay off as the game drew to an end. However, ten minutes from time Felixstowe managed to score from a short corner, devastating and disappointing Sudbury. For the remainder of the game Sudbury pushed forward and looked threatening in front of goal, however it wasn’t meant to be. Overall a fantastic result for Sudbury against the league winners. Reflecting on the season, Captain Maria Risley is incredibly proud of the team’s achievements. Some excellent results and individual improvements have made this season an enjoyable and rememberable one. Sudbury Ladies 4ths finished a very respectable seventh in their league. Apr 12, 2010, 3:08 pm Lowestoft ladies 3rd 5 - 0 Sudbury ladies 4th X1 Heading into the penultimate game of the season, against a table topping team, Sudbury knew they were in for a tough game. Sudbury started brightly, moving the ball around the pitch well, allowing for some positive individual play from Kate Hurley and Molly May Strong defending from Jaclyn Taylor, Lily Chiang, Olivia Hurley and Jessica Kendell limited Lowestoft’s chances in the D for much of the first half. Despite Sudbury’s best efforts, Lowestoft managed to break through to score an opportunist goal, leaving the score 1-0 at half time. The second half began well with good end to end play, however as the half wore on, Sudbury broke down defensively, allowing Lowestoft to score three goals in quick succession, despite goal keeper Peggy Bridges consistently strong and professional saves. Sudbury never let their heads drop and continued with a positive outlook creating many break away attacks, often resulting in a one on one with the opposing keeper, which Sudbury were very unlucky not to capitalize on. Continuing hard work from the young team made this an enjoyable game. However the final result of 5-0 did reflect some basic errors that Sudbury need to work on. Overall a positive game with some very strong individual performances. Player of the match was awarded to Jessica Kendell for her positive attitude, good ball control and strong passing. Mar 29, 2010, 2:02 pm Carlton Par Ladies 5 - 1 Sudbury Ladies 2nd X1 This rearranged game, following poor weather earlier in the season meant some regulars were missing but it was a good opportunity for some new faces to get their chance in the side. Carlton Park made an immediate impact and scored after just 90 seconds with the ball trickling over the line as keeper Herrington and her defensive line were outdone by a deflection. It would have been very easy for Sudbury to drop their heads but to their credit they battled for the rest of the first half, defending and tackling well in open play and a dozen short corners. Anna Cooper and Mishka Mayers both having a good half but the star was definitely Amy Herrington in the Sudbury goal who saved from every angle. Sudbury did break and Lucy Kevis and Sarah Tavener looked dangerous when working with the youth and enthusiasm of Florrie Barber on the front line. Carlton Park clearly frustrated at being denied came out all guns blazing second half and scored within a minute of the restart, their tally mounted to 5 through the second half as they deployed their best striker to fire multiple efforts on goal. But Sudbury gained a consolation goal following a quick hit from the defence by Sarah Wordley found Barber who slipped to Lucy Kevis who showed great skill to beat a defender and the keeper and fire into the corner of the goal. It was nice consolation following a long season! Credit to all who turned out for this final fixture for their attitude and determination and never giving in. Mar 23, 2010, 9:14 am Newmarket Ladies 3rd X1 0 - 8 Sudbury Ladies 4th X1 An early start for the young Sudbury side saw the team eager to continue their run of successful results. Sudbury looked strong from the start, making no mistakes in moving the ball around and pushing Newmarket back into their own half, with good runs from Celia Fitch-Holland and Catherine Nay. Early into the game Alice King opened the scoring from a confident short corner strike. As Sudbury continued to move the ball around the field it wasn’t long until Sudbury were awarded a penalty flick which captain Maria Risley successfully converted, giving Sudbury a 2-0 lead. The rest of the half saw Sudbury pile the pressure on the Newmarket defence and goals were scored by Alice King, Lily Chiang and Molly May leaving Sudbury 6-0 up at half time. The second half saw Newmarket pick up the pace as they began to attack the Sudbury defence of Jaclyn Taylor, Lily Chiang, Olivia Hurley and Kate Hurley who worked hard to move the ball out of danger. Combined with the excellent goal keeping from the ever dependable Peggy Bridges Sudbury managed to maintain a clean sheet. Sudbury took advice to move the ball out wide which created chances for wingers Ellie Bailey and Hannah Joy to push the ball forward and set Alice King up for two more goals by full time. Hannah Joy was awarded player of the match for her outstanding effort and amazing improvement as a player. This result now moves Sudbury up to sixth place in their league. |
