Sudbury Ladies 1st X1 Match Report Friendly 4th Sept 2010
Sep 6, 2010, 3:58 pm

Broxbourne Ladies 1st X1 1 - 1 Sudbury Ladies 1st X1

Wapping Ladies 1st X1 1 - 1 Sudbury Ladies 1st X1

Sudbury Ladies 1st X1 travelled away to Broxbourne for a double header against Broxbourne and Wapping (The Later Sudbury meet later on this season in the league). This prooved a very important friendly for Sudbury, who quite clearly needed to shake off a few cobwebs.

Wapping started the stronger putting Sudbury immediately onto the back foot, but the defence of Emma Stephens, Hayley Spooner , Katie Clark, Becky Younger and keeper Sandra Mackay kept their efforts at bay with some good solid defensive work.
Sudbury put together some good passages of play, through the midfield of Kirsty Sloan, Chloe Mills, Becky Spencer, Ellie Colton and Tracey Caddock, all working very hard to pressurise the Wapping defence, with good runs made by Jess Sheperdson upfront, but it was wapping who managed to convert their first short corner in the first half, the initial strike saved by Mackay but wapping managed to play on the rebound to make the score at half time 1 - 0
Sudbury made a few changes in the 2nd half, and came out a little bit better than they started, managing to keep the opositions defence busy, although wapping had their chances they were denied by some good saves by Mackay and some good clearances from the defence. It was Sudbury however that were awarded a flick from an initial strike by Sloan thatwas stopped on the line by the Wapping defenders body. Casey Humpries bravely stepped up to convert an excallent penalty flick to leave the score 1 - 1

Sudburys 2nd game against Broxbourne was again another wake up call, Sudbury still looking like they needed to get out of the blocks. Sudbury made further changes between games trying players in different positions, again Sudbury were putting together some good passages of play and at times looking promising. Broxbourne opened the score from open play, which fired sudbury up who kept more possesion and eventually a goal came from a lovely hit from a lovely cross in from the left from Ellie Colton who found Kirsty Sloan at the top of the D who sent the ball to the back of the net. This game finished as the last did and in fact as all games at Broxbounrn as a 1 - 1 draw.

Sudbury Ladies 2nd Team Match Report Friendly 4th Sept 2010
Sep 6, 2010, 3:55 pm

Sudbury Ladies 2nd X1 2 - 1 Phoenix Ladies

A new season with a new captain Collette Cottrell and plenty of new faces for this first friendly game of the new season.  Phoenix were a young side from Braintree and looked the sharper in the early exchanges but the midfield of Lily Chang, Olivia Hurley, Alice King and Lucy Kevis soon got a feel for the pace and started to both stifle Phoenix attacks and start to feed Debbie King on the forward line.  King scored her first of the season after 20 minutes when left unmarked she shot from the top right of the D and her angled powerful shot left the keeper stranded.  Debutant Kate Hurley and regular Anna Cooper tackled and broke down play well in the defensive area of the park with Sarah Wordley distributing the ball and getting play moving.  Keeper Cottrell was called upon to make a number of saves in the first half from open play and numerous short corners but her skill and that of her defence thwarted the visitors efforts.   At half time coach Kevis asked for more commitment from the young legs in the side in being first to 50/50 balls and upping the tenacity shown.   Phoenix continued to push, once again gaining a dozen short corners but an in form Cottrell saved with every part of her body to deny them a goal.  Sudbury looked dangerous on the break with the fresh legs of Florrie Barber providing the pace, supported by the experience of Debbie King who secured a brace when she fired home a spilt ball from 6 yards out.  Phoenix grabbed a late consolation from one of their many short corners and will be kicking themselves that they didn’t convert their numerous chances into more goals.  Player of the match was awarded jointly to Anna Cooper and Collette Cottrell.  A good first win for the newly formed Sudbury side.
