| Game Notes | Sudbury started the match brightly and enjoyed much of the early attacking play. Some good surging runs from Kate Hurley and Moira Thompson down the wings and with Alice King and Lily Chiang controlling the midfield saw the opposition encamped in their own end of the pitch for much of the first half. Maria Risley hit the post and Alice King shot just wide, but despite keeping the opposition goal keeper busy, Sudbury were unable to convert their chances into goals and the score remained 0-0 at half time.Sudbury continued to dominate the second half and their first goal came following an excellent pass from the right into the ‘D’ by Kate Hurley which found Alice King on hand to slot into the goal.Sudbury then allowed themselves to lose their shape a little which gave Newmarket the opportunity to break away and force a fine save from goal keeper Peggy.Having survived this scare Sudbury regrouped and pushed forward again. A superb run by Daisy Palmer from deep in her own half saw her take the ball almost the full length of the pitch, into the D and unleash a fine shot for an excellent solo goal.Ten minutes from time a goalmouth scramble forced a save from the Newmarket keeper, Celia Fitch-Holland collected the rebound and kept her composure to guide the ball back into the goal from close range to make the score 3-0 at the final whistle. This team of predominantly young players has improved significantly during the first half of the season and having gained confidence can look forward to the second half with optimism.Player of the match was awarded to Celia Fitch-Holland for her battling display and “never give up” attitude. |
