Sudbury U9's had their first matches of the new season sunday against
Bury and went into them with heart and determination. Sudbury A team faced Bury B to get the games started, and in the first half saw the defence of Freya, James and Joe working hard to keep Bury out of their goal area. Meanwile the midfield of Ben, Jessica and Adam helped to push forward and link up Noah on the attacks. Sudbury were unlucky to conceed 2 goals in the first half but it never phased them as they kept on pushing and were rewarded when Ben struck hoime to make the score 2-1 at half time. The 2nd half saw much the same game with the team pushing hard and Huxley making some goods runs and they defended well with Natasha interceptions but ending the game with the final score at 5-1 to Bury. Their 2nd game of the day was a different story. Sudbury pushed and pressed hard with everyone uping their game which paid off in the 1st half when Ben picked up the ball and scored to take a 1-0 lead. The 2nd half continued in the same fashion again lots of pressure from both teams, but this time Bury took the advantage and equalised. This seemed to spur on Sudbury and a free hit was won just outside the D. Jessica calmly squared to Noah, who slipped to Ben to put home the winning goal. Sudbury B team faced Bury A first and at found it hard to find their feet letting Bury take an early lead. However Sudbury didnt give up and there was some great defending by Chloe, Charlie and Lucie. The midfield of Lottie, Tom and Gemma also worked hard linking the defenders and Molly up front. Bury managed to break them down just before half time to take a 2-0 lead into the break. After the break Sudbury seemed more alert with Xavi linking up the new defense with Tessa to the the new attack of Rebecca and Tom and they were unlucky not to score. Bury won the game 3-0 but overall Sudbury had raised themselves in the second half. Having to play their 2nd game straight off against Bury B, Sudbury were showing signs of tiredness and although they made some great tackles and fast forward runs nothing came off it and bury took the game 4-0. However again Sudbury had picked themselves up in the 2nd half and showed lots of signs of improvement. Overall, the U9's should be proud of their performances as they all showed a great spirit and had loads of fun, so well done all. U13 girls round off successful season
Lost to Bury A 2-1
Beat Bury B 2-0
In the second game against the B side
The u13 girls finished second to Bury A in their league but more pleasing is the improvement in the skills and ability of all those who have played. In addition they epitomise all that’s good about junior sport with their determination but sportsmanlike approach. Congratulations to all those who have played this year.

U13 girls fixtures
Beat Ipswich A 2-0
Beat Ipswich B 4 – 2
After a very successful run of fixtures confidence was high with the u13 girls despite the absence of regular Lily Chiang. Ipswich were considerably taller than the Sudbury side but not stronger or more skilful. Sudbury played the ball around well with Daisy Palmer and Sophie Leseberg Smith proving particularly effective in midfield. Kate Hurley's confidence also showed as she drove forward to support the midfield. It was the strength and goal scoring ability of Alice King that once again saw Sudbury take advantage of slack defending. King has a natural ability to dribble a ball at speed and always get a shot on goal. Ipswich rallied slightly but were closed down by Hurley and Poppy McIntosh in defence. The Sudbury girls were thrilled with their win.
The side was reshuffled for the fixture with Ipswich B with Jessica and Charlotte Thornton playing a part in the 4-2 victory. Olivia May also joined the fray worked really hard in midfield to tackle well and spoil Ipswich's chances of any possession. Palmer once again played a crucial role in the centre of midfield and was often feeder to the rampant King who scored all four Sudbury goals with determined runs on the Ipswich goal. Ipswich secured a couple of consolation goals late on in the game but Sudbury's lead never looked threatened.
So another success day for the girls side who were; Lizzie Anderson (GK), Poppy McIntosh, Kate Hurley, Jessica Thornton, Olivia May, Daisy Palmer, Charlotte Thornton, Sophie Leseberg Smith and Alice King Dec 16, 2007, 9:53 pm
Sudbury B u11's 0-3 Colchester
Sudbury A u11's 0-0 Felixstowe
Sudbury B u11's 0-5 Felixstowe
Sudbury A u11's 1-2 Colchester
The last round of league games before Christmas led to some frustrating results for both Sudbury's u11 teams, results that do not reflect Sudbury's chances, work rate and at times, domination.
Sudbury's B team fixtures against Colchester and Felixstowe were both played at a good pace and started off very even, but in both games Sudbury struggled to defend against strong opposition once they conceded
the first goal in both fixtures.
Although the results did not go Sudbury's way there were positives to take from the games, yet again Sudbury's work rate was faultless and no more could have been asked from the young players as far as effort was concerned. Sudbury, after the Christmas break, know what they have to work on and are confident they can start turning their fortunes around with more use of the whole pitch and better link up play between the defence and midfield.
Overall the Sudbury B team can be proud of themselves after making the big step up from under 9 hockey at the start of the season and will grow much stronger as a team.
Sudbury A team probably had one of the unluckiest days of the season. Their first fixture against Felixstowe saw them dominate the game and hit the post twice but still they could not make the break through they so deserved. Sudbury continued to pin Felixstowe back in their own half but like many other games this season just failed to finish the team off.
The second game for the A team saw Sudbury continue the way they finished the first game, passing the ball well and using the whole pitch in what at times was the best hockey they have played this season but Colchester caught them on a counter attack in which the hosts took a 1-0 lead into half time.
The second half Sudbury did not drop their heads and continued pushing forward looking for the equaliser which came a couple of minutes before the final whistle. Some good work starting from defence and again working well down the left side of the pitch saw Laetitia Corbett pick the ball up outside the area and with some good stick work rounded the defence to slot the ball home at the near post for a much deserved goal.
With the Sudbury spirits still on a high they pushed for the winner leaving again an opportunity for Colchester to hit them with another counter attack and from this, with a minute left on the clock, Colchester scored a late winner.
Despite the result, the all girl team of Sudbury, knowing how well they played, were still smiling and are well aware that if they continue with performances like that, they will become a hard team to beat in the new year Dec 10, 2007, 5:53 pm Colchester 0 - 5 Sudbury
A really strong Sudbury U9s played against Colchester captained by Will Bottrell and
Huxley Kendall. Ben Clarke once again shone for the side scoring three of the five goals, Will Bottrell and Charlie Selfridge scored the two remaining. A strong defence by Victoria Anderson was the key to their success. Felixstowe 1 - 4 Sudbury After playing a sterling first match against Colchester the team played Felixstowe and were once again triumphant. The side had fabulous cohesion with Kelvin playing exceptionally well in midfield. His partnership with Ellen was superb and only allowed the ball into the Sudbury goal area on one occasion. Charlie Selfridge scored three goals and Ben Clarke the fourth. Well done Sudbury U9s you now have a well-deserved break and we look forward to more 'fight' in the New Year Dec 10, 2007, 5:44 pm
Sudbury Girls 5- 0 Colchester
Sudbury met with Colchester for their first game in very wet conditions but undeterred played some fine hockey to come out 5-0 winners. Jessica Thornton and Kate Hurley kept the defensive line solid and make some good tackles but the midfield was where all the action was with Lily Chiang and Daisy Palmer linking well to create chances down the right hand flank. Sudbury's first goal was scored by Charlotte Thornton who made no mistake from 6 yards out. Alice King then continued her goalscoring season by scoring a hat-trick within 8 minutes and Lily Chiang rounded off a very good personal performance with a well struck goal. Sudbury played really well with solid passing and movement and a determination to win which outplayed their opponents.
Sudbury Girls 2- 0Felixstowe
Felixstowe fielded youngsters at the top of the age range who physically were taller and stronger than Sudbury but undeterred the Sudbury girls took the game to them and used their speed and nimble passing to outwit their opponents. Sophie Lesberg Smith linked well with Daisy Palmer to retain possession and control of the game for Sudbury who went 1-0 up after a driving run from Alice King who foiled two defenders before firing home. King delivered an almost identical goal in the second half to seal the victory for Sudbury and a successful day for Sudbury.
Overall the familiarity and good basic skills of the squad are paying dividends with them unbeaten this season.
Nov 27, 2007, 7:42 pm Sudbury A 0-0 Colchester
Sudbury B 1-4 Ipswich
Sudbury B 0-2 Colchester
Sudbury A 0-6 Ipswich
The opening game of the day was a very well battled draw, both Sudbury and Colchester played some very fast and flowing hockey but neither was able to break the deadlock. Colchester did manage to maintain plenty of pressure on the Sudbury goal with a string of short corners but the combination of good goal keeping and excellent defending kept the game all level. The midfield and forward line of Sudbury kept pushing forward and threw everything at Colchester but the score finished all level which was probably a fair result for both teams.
Sudbury B team started the day against a well organised Ipswich team who began the game at a fast pace and hit Sudbury with 4 goals in the first half. Sudbury tried desperately to keep possession to give their defence time to regroup after constant pressure for 10 minutes. After the break and some encouraging words the second half was very different. Sudbury's defence looked stronger and linked with the midfield much more effectively and from one of those link up plays, Ethan Barrett picked the ball up in his own half and made a solo run down the pitch rounding several Ipswich players to slot the ball home at the near post leaving the keeper stranded.
Sudbury B team played Colchester straight after their first game and the confidence stayed with them. Although the result did not go their way, the Sudbury players can take great heart out of the way they played. Colchester were well organised and deserved their victory but the game was much more even than the score line suggests. Sudbury, like on many other occasions, played the ball around well but could not find the final pass to break through the Colchester back line.
The final game for the under 11 teams was again a very even and well played game in the first half. The Sudbury A team back line linked well with the midfield and were unlucky to concede a goal. Sudbury continued to push but the half time whistle came too early. The second half was a totally different story, Sudbury seemed to be deflated by trailing after their hard work in the first half and was punished by a succession of quick goals from the Ipswich front line.
Overall, Sudbury can still take confidence from their performance but will be aware that they have to be more hungry and clinical in front of goal to put other teams on the back foot. Nov 26, 2007, 6:48 pm
The Sudbury U9s played against
Ben Clarke scored a fantastic goal from the edge of the ‘d' after dribbling the ball from the centre line, within the first minute of the game. Ipswich were a strong and tenacious side who gave
A big thank you and well done to all seventeen players who played albeit for some who only had half a game. Nov 14, 2007, 1:55 pm
U13 Girls matches on Sunday 11th November
Sudbury U13 girls travelled up to Lowestoft for the third round of the Suffolk Youth League fixtures to face host team Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds A and B teams.
The first match brought opponents Bury B and after a slow start, getting used to the pitch, Sudbury soon took the lead when a shot from Alice King rebounded off the Bury keeper only to find Charlotte Thornton ready to pounce. Sudbury's second goal came from open play when King again found herself in front of goal, this time not to be denied. King then added to her tally with a solo effort from an interception at the restart, driving the circle and decisively striking past the keeper, finishing this game 3-0 to Sudbury.
Lowestoft were Sudbury's next opposition and the visiting side continued with their open and fluent play. Sudbury took the lead when Sophie Lesebergh Smith slipped the ball home after a goalmouth scrabble. Their second goal came from the best move of the day when a clearance found Lesebergh Smith, passing to Lily Chiang who drove the circle and slipped the ball to an open King to slot home her third of the day. The second half proved a much tighter prospect with the Sudbury defence having to defend well, and Lizzie Anderson pulling off some fine saves in goal. Lowestoft managed to pull one back but Sudbury battled to the end to keep their lead.
The final clash of day brought together Bury A and Sudbury, both undefeated on the day. This was a much harder game and Sudbury found themselves with their backs to the wall. Great keeping from Lizzie Anderson held Bury out until just before half time. Sudbury continued to battle in the second half but were unable to keep Bury's star player at bay, who scored from two short corners, taking the final score to 3-0 to Bury A. Overall a very pleasing team performance from Sudbury who showed great character and determination, never giving up or letting their heads drop.
The next round of Suffolk Junior League is on 25th November when Sudbury will be hosting to Colchester and Ipswich. Oct 25, 2007, 11:04 pm
Sudbury travelled to Ipswich Hockey Club for the second round of the Suffolk Youth Hockey League, to meet Ipswich & East Suffolk, Lowestoft and hosts Ipswich.
The U9 Sudbury team found themselves up against Ipswich A and B teams, as Ipswich E-S and Lowestoft having no eligible sides. The opening match against Ipswich B was fiercely contested and Sudbury battled well to come away with a 0-0 draw. The second match against Ipswich A saw Sudbury play good positional hockey with excellent team effort, which was rewarded by a goal from Charlie Selfridge and a 1-0 victory. Overall a very pleasing team performance with special mentions for Ben Clark and Charlie Selfridge.
The U11 matches saw Sudbury fielding 2 teams, Sudbury A and B to meet Ipswich A team, again Ipswich E-S and Lowestoft unable to field eligible teams in this age group.
The B Team were first to play against Ipswich A and although Sudbury battled hard and played with much enthusiasm, found the opposition too strong and lost 6-0. This did not discourage them and their second match against the Sudbury A Team, was again fiercely contested but ended 0-0.
Sudbury A then found themselves up against Ipswich A and despite fielding an all girls side against a very good mixed side, Sudbury played with great determination and effort. Defending well for most of the first half and part of the second half, Sudbury were very unlucky not to come away winners after pressuring the Ipswich goal in the dying minutes of the game, the final score 0-0.
Another very pleasing and encouraging day for Sudbury Junior hockey. Oct 25, 2007, 10:58 pm

The U13 girls had there first competitive run out of the season at the new surface at Gt Cornard. The games were 7 a side and Sudbury made a strong start in there first game against Colchester showing good passing and movement to create numerous chances. They won the game 4-0 and goalscorers were Daisy Palmer, Sophie Leseberg Smith and Alice King scored two from breakaway runs. Sudbury then met a mixed IES side and were put under more pressure but goalkeeper Lizzie Anderson and defensive line of Poppy McIntosh and Kate Hurley holding up well, despite their efforts Sudbury lost the game 3-2 but will be awarded the points as IES fielded an ineligible side. The Sudbury scorer in that game was once again an in form Alice King who got both goals. The final game was against Felixstowe who clearly had a side at the top end of their age group. Once again Lily Chiang, Daisy Palmer and Charlotte Thornton combined well in midfield but Felixstowe were the stronger of the sides and came out 2-1 winners. A positive start to competitive hockey for this U13 group with their next fixtures next Sunday over at Ipswich. |
