Sudbury Mens 1st Team Match Report 12th Dec 2009
Dec 15, 2009, 11:27 amSudbury 1ST XI 1 – 3 Dereham 2ND XI
Sudbury suffered yet another home defeat on Saturday against a Dereham side who sit second in the league. This defeat, along with results elsewhere, mean that Sudbury enter the Christmas break sitting in the relegation zone.
Sudbury started the game brightly and matched the high tempo set by the strong Dereham side. The Sudbury back four of Bullock, Harrington, Underhay, and Keefe did well to keep the lively Dereham forwards at bay. With the back four holding firm, Sudbury were able to create chances – Bevan hit the post from a short corner, and Abrey dragged a reverse stick shot wide having left three Dereham defenders for dead.
Dereham took the lead midway through the first half, but Sudbury restored parity before the break when Unwin finished well on his reverse side.
Sudbury owed much to keeper Warnes who made some great saves in what was undoubtedly his best performance of the season.
After the break Dereham struck immediately with a really well worked goal. A series of inter-passing between the midfielders left the Dereham forward with a simple finish.
Despite falling between Sudbury continued to battle. The midfield of Clubb, Burton, Chambers, and Thorpe worked hard to match the intensity set by Dereham. In the last fifteen minutes, Sudbury dominated the game. Playing some of their best hockey of the season Sudbury through everything they had at the Dereham defence, but in the end, they couldn’t find a way through.
With the last hit of the game Dereham scored a breakaway goal to extend their lead.
If Sudbury play as they did on Saturday for the rest of the season they will win the majority of their remaining games.
Sudbury Ladies 1st Team Match Report 12th Dec 2009
Dec 14, 2009, 10:27 amSudbury Ladies 1st X1 2 - 0 Broxbourne Ladies 1st X1
Sudbury Ladies 1sts finished a very successful first half of the season with another 3 points.
A potentially tough game against Broxbourne, who had sent Sudbury out of the EH Trophy earlier in the season, started at a fast pace. Sudbury’s defence had to be alert early on as Broxbourne attacked immediately from the whistle. Eventually Sudbury settled and began to put together some better passages of passing play with some lovely runs being made by Tracy Caddock, Chloe Mills, Emma Stephens and Ellie Colton. But, as has happened so many times this season, the team were unable to convert all the pressure and possession. Several short corners were won but none were taken advantage of. In fact Sudbury needed player of the match, keeper Sandra Mackay, to make some outstanding saves, including a one on one at this point to keep the score 0-0. Sudbury began the second half determined not to make the same mistakes as previous weeks. They wanted to make sure they made all their possession count, some excellent defensive play from Becky Golding, Hayley Spooner, Katie Clark and Emma Stephens broke down the Broxbourne attacks and distributed the ball down the pitch, the ever impressive Kirsty Sloan commanded the centre of midfield and provided many balls to start Sudbury’s final attack into the opposition’s 25. After various chances going astray Sudbury finally made all their hard work count. A run down the right by Ellie Colton saw her beat a player and strike the ball across the face of goal, Mandy Coleman was there to redirect the ball past the falling Broxbourne keeper. Despite more Broxbourne attacks, Sudbury furthered their lead when some calm play in the D from Ami Humphreys saw Coleman with a chance to score her second. This gave Sudbury a much needed 3 points to continue to put the pressure on Sevenoaks at the top of the table going into the Christmas break. The team would like to thank all our supporters and wish them a Happy Christmas!
Sudbury Ladies 2nd Team Match Report 12th Dec 2009
Dec 14, 2009, 10:23 amDereham Ladies 2nd X1 1 - 0 Sudbury Ladies 2nd X1
Following a disappointing performance and result against fellow strugglers UEA last week, some positive changes were made to the Sudbury formation and readiness for the last game before Christmas. Sudbury settled quickly into the new formation and it was just as well as Dereham had the better of the early exchanges putting Sudbury under intense pressure for the first 15 minutes gaining 6 or more short corners. Jenny Brown was out quick to the corners and also tackled and broke down play really well to thwart the Dereham efforts. It wasn’t all one way with Sarah Taverner, Lucy Kevis and Lou Palmer linking well in midfield to create a few chances for Sudbury too. Becky Spencer took a nasty knock to the leg and had to retire and was replaced by Florrie Barber who added pace and determination to the forward line. At half time all square with the call out from captain Ruth Warnes to keep the marking tight whilst taking chances to push forward. Sudbury made a great start to the second half and themselves gained some short corners, they hit the post and the had another chance tantalising just miss the goal. It seemed it wasn’t to be Sudbury’s day in front of goal. It wasn’t all one way however with Anna Cooper, Jenny Brown and Lou Bonner being kept busy in defence. For 67 of the 70 minutes Sudbury were equal to Dereham and were heading for a deserved point. A dubious short corner was awarded and Dereham fired it to the Sudbury left hand post leaving Cottrell and Palmer with no chance to cover. A heartbreaking result for Sudbury having played so well but many positives can be drawn from the manner of the performance by all the players involved.
